What you see when the names are hidden
In the Angel Investor Time Machine you don't see company names, only the kind of one-line pitch investors heard at the time: "a college-only social network started in a Harvard dorm," "a site that rents air mattresses in spare rooms to travelers," "a Korean delivery app that put takeout flyers on your phone." They sound like obvious winners now, but every round also includes failures that sounded just as good.
Most companies are US startups, with a couple of Korean ones (Baemin and Coupang). In English mode, your stake is shown as $10,000.

Four eras
1999–2004, after the dot-com crash: Pets.com went public in February 2000 and liquidated that November; online grocer Webvan went bankrupt in 2001. Meanwhile the first $500,000 of outside money in a college social network in 2004 eventually returned more than $1 billion.
2005–2011, video and smartphones: a video-sharing site was bought for $1.65 billion 18 months after it was founded, and a photo-filter app for about $1 billion 18 months after launch. Color, a photo-sharing app that raised a fortune before launch, effectively shut down the next year.
2009–2014, sharing and delivery: Korean delivery app Baemin was acquired in 2019 at a valuation of about ₩4.75 trillion, turning an early ₩300 million seed investment into about ₩299 billion. The Wi-Fi juicer Juicero closed within months of reports that you could squeeze its packs by hand.
2016–2019, giant late-stage rounds: even companies that already look huge can fall. WeWork's 2019 IPO collapsed and it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2023; short-video app Quibi shut down six months after launching.
How early-stage investing really works
The chip system mirrors real angel investing: most bets go to zero, but a single breakout can cover every loss and then some. Concentrate your chips and you win or lose big; spread them out and you won't miss the winner, but your return gets diluted. Multiples use reported early-investor returns where available and otherwise the ratio between the valuation at investment and the later acquisition or IPO value, ignoring later dilution.
