이 게임들은 어떻게 만들었나요?
타임머신 대기자 연합의 모든 게임은 “그때로 돌아가면 얼마나 벌 수 있을까?”라는 하나의 질문에서 출발합니다. 누구나 한 번쯤 “그때 그 주식을 샀더라면”, “그 운동화를 안 신고 보관했더라면” 하고 상상해 보지요. 이 게임들은 그 상상을 실제 기록과 맞대어 볼 수 있게 만든 놀이입니다.
게임에 나오는 숫자는 지어낸 것이 아닙니다. 주식은 배당을 재투자한 연말 수정주가, 명품은 매장 정가 인상 기록과 실제 경매 낙찰가, 예술품은 같은 작품의 두 차례 거래 가격, 옛날 물가는 언론 보도와 공공기관의 요금 연혁을 바탕으로 했습니다. 다만 게임으로 만들기 위해 계산을 단순화했기 때문에, 각 게임의 결과 화면과 이용 안내에 기준과 한계를 함께 적어 두었습니다.

1~3분 게임은 옛날 물가를 맞히는 퀴즈입니다. 1988년 월드콘과 지하철 요금 중 무엇이 더 비쌌는지, 2008년에 5만 원권을 꺼내면 왜 수상한 사람이 되는지처럼 짧지만 “아, 그랬지!” 하게 되는 문제들로 채웠습니다.
5분 게임은 이름을 가린 카드에 가상 자금을 나눠 거는 블라인드 게임입니다. 페이스북·우버·배달의민족 같은 회사가 이름 없이 “대학생 전용 인맥 사이트”, “동네 전단지를 모은 배달 앱”으로만 등장하면, 결과를 아는 우리도 의외로 쉽게 고르지 못합니다. 그 망설임이 이 게임의 핵심입니다.
15분 이상 걸리는 본격 시뮬레이션은 주식·영화·스포츠·부동산을 주제로 수십 년을 라운드별로 건너뛰며 자산을 굴려 보는 긴 여행입니다.
결과보다 과정이 재미있는 이유
과거의 결과를 알고 나면 그 선택이 당연해 보입니다. 하지만 게임 속 단서는 당시 사람들이 보던 정보에 가깝게 쓰여 있어서, 막상 고르려고 하면 “이게 정말 뜰까?” 하는 당시의 불확실함이 되살아납니다. 크게 성공한 회사 옆에는 똑같이 그럴듯했지만 사라진 회사들이 있고, 수십 배 오른 가방 옆에는 정가 아래로 떨어진 운동화가 있습니다. 게임을 하다 보면 ‘미래를 아는 것’과 ‘좋은 선택을 하는 것’이 얼마나 다른지 자연스럽게 느끼게 됩니다.
How were these games made?
Every game at Time Machine Society starts from one question: "If I could go back, how much could I make?" Everyone has wondered what would have happened if they'd bought that stock or kept those sneakers in the box. These games let you test that daydream against real records.
The numbers aren't made up. Stocks use dividend-reinvested, split-adjusted prices; luxury goods use list-price histories and real auction results; art uses two recorded sales of the same work; and old prices come from news reports and official fare histories. Because the math is simplified to make a game, each result screen and the guide explain the basis and the limits.
Pick by play time
1–3 minute games are quick quizzes about old prices, mostly everyday prices in Seoul, South Korea: was a 1988 ice cream more expensive than a subway ride? Why would pulling out a ₩50,000 note in 2008 make you look suspicious?
5-minute games are blind-card games where you spread virtual money across hidden cards. When Facebook, Uber or Korea's Baemin show up only as "a college-only social network" or "an app full of takeout flyers," even people who know how things turned out find it surprisingly hard to choose. That hesitation is the point.
15-minute-plus simulations cover US stocks, Hollywood movies, famous sports matches and Korean real estate, hopping through decades round by round.
Why the journey beats the result
Once you know the outcome, old choices look obvious. But the clues in these games are written close to what people saw at the time, so the old uncertainty comes back: "Will this really take off?"
