‘예술품 조각투자 타임머신’은 경매장에 천으로 덮인 작품이 걸려 있다는 설정입니다. 보이는 것은 도록의 짧은 설명과 당시 거래 가격뿐입니다. 작품 대신 금을 살 수도 있습니다. 네 번의 경매장 방문 동안 가상 자금을 작품 지분에 나눠 투자하고, 결과 공개 때 천을 걷으면 실제 작품과 이후 거래 기록이 나타납니다.

경매 기록으로 보는 미술 시장
- 푸른 배경 위 커다란 해골 얼굴: 1984년 1만 9천 달러에 거래된 바스키아의 「무제」(1982)는 2017년 소더비에서 1억 1,050만 달러에 낙찰됐습니다.
- 들판의 건초더미: 1986년 253만 달러였던 모네의 「건초더미」는 2019년 1억 1,070만 달러에 낙찰돼 인상파 작품 경매 최고가를 세웠습니다.
- 세계 최고가의 명작: 1990년 7,810만 달러에 팔린 르누아르의 「물랭 드 라 갈레트의 무도회」(작은 버전)는 구매자의 회사가 자금난에 빠지면서 몇 년 뒤 손해를 보고 팔렸습니다. 명작도 비싸게 사면 손실이 납니다.
- 작가 미상의 낡은 예수 초상: 2005년 1만 달러 안팎에 팔린 그림은 복원과 감정을 거쳐 레오나르도 다빈치의 「살바토르 문디」로 소개됐고, 2017년 4억 5,030만 달러에 낙찰됐습니다. 진위 논란은 지금도 이어집니다.
- 밈과 디지털의 시대: 2018년 104만 파운드에 낙찰된 직후 액자 속 파쇄기로 절반이 잘린 뱅크시의 그림은 2021년 1,860만 파운드에 다시 팔렸습니다. 반면 2022년 4월 약 43만 달러였던 원숭이 그림 NFT의 최저가는 2024년 9월 약 3만 달러로 90% 넘게 떨어졌습니다.

각 라운드에는 그림 대신 금 현물이 선택지로 나옵니다. 금 연평균 가격은 1984년 온스당 약 360달러에서 2024년 약 2,390달러가 됐습니다. 대박 난 작품만큼은 아니지만, 작품 대부분은 되팔기 어렵고 보험·보관·수수료 비용이 든다는 점을 생각하면 금이 가장 속 편한 선택일 때도 많습니다.

Over four auction visits you spread virtual money across fractional shares; when results come in, the drape lifts to reveal the real work and what it sold for next.

The art market through auction records
- A huge skull-like face on blue: Basquiat's Untitled (1982) sold for $19,000 in 1984 and for $110.5 million at Sotheby's in 2017.
- Haystacks in a field: Monet's Meules, $2.53 million in 1986, sold for $110.7 million in 2019, a record for an Impressionist work at auction.
- A world-record masterpiece: Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette (smaller version) sold for $78.1 million in 1990, then was sold at a loss a few years later when the buyer's company ran into financial trouble. Even a masterpiece loses money if you overpay.
- A battered old portrait of Christ: bought in 2005 for around $10,000, it was restored, presented as Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi and sold for $450.3 million in 2017. Debate over its authenticity continues.
- The age of memes and digital art: Banksy's picture that shredded itself right after selling for £1.04 million in 2018 resold for £18.6 million in 2021. Meanwhile the floor price of a Bored Ape NFT fell from about $429,000 in April 2022 to about $30,000 by September 2024.
Compare with gold
Every round offers physical gold instead of art. Gold's annual average went from about $360 an ounce in 1984 to about $2,390 in 2024. It's no match for the biggest art wins, but most art is hard to resell and comes with insurance, storage and fees, so gold is often the calmer choice.
