How well do you remember old prices?

"Which Costs More?" is a 10-question quiz comparing two prices. Each run mixes 4 same-year Korean price comparisons, 3 questions about which price rose more over the decades, and 3 world-price questions comparing everyday prices in the US and UK. You don't see the numbers until you answer; then the real prices and sources appear.

Korean questions are about everyday life in Seoul, South Korea, so amounts are in Korean won (₩1,000 is roughly $0.75 today). World questions use US and UK prices.

Some of the facts inside

"How much did it rise?" is better calculated than guessed

Jajangmyeon went from ₩100 in 1970 to about ₩7,500 in Seoul in 2025, 75 times higher. A Seoul city bus went from ₩10 in 1970 to ₩1,500 in 2023, 150 times higher. Meanwhile Seoul's bus and subway, both ₩1,050 in 2012, drifted apart to ₩1,500 and ₩1,400 by 2023. The feeling that "everything got expensive" varies hugely by item.

World prices too

World questions use everyday prices in the US and UK. In 1970 an hour at the US minimum wage ($1.60) bought a movie ticket (about $1.55 on average), a gallon of gas cost about 36¢, and a New York subway ride 30¢. A UK first-class stamp went from 3p in 1971 to £1.70 in 2025, about 57x, while a US stamp rose only about 12x over the same span. Prices varied by place and store, so treat them as typical values.
