같은 물건, 전혀 다른 결과
- 다이버 시계: 1974년 정가 325달러였던 스테인리스 다이버 시계는 2024년 같은 계열 매장 정가가 약 9,100달러입니다. 28배지요. 그런데 같은 시계를 2006년 정가 3,800달러에 샀다면 2.4배에 그칩니다. 무엇을 사느냐만큼 언제 사느냐가 중요합니다.
- 퀼팅 숄더백: 1990년 1,150달러였던 가방의 미국 매장 정가는 2025년 약 11,300달러가 됐습니다. 2019년 5,800달러에 샀더라도 6년 만에 거의 두 배입니다.
- 카드 상자: 1999년 118달러였던 몬스터 카드 초판 미개봉 상자는 2021년 경매에서 40만 8천 달러에 낙찰됐습니다. 최상급 미개봉 상자 기준입니다.
- 보라색 곰 인형: 1997년 수집 열풍 때 약 250달러에 거래되던 한정판 곰 인형은 열풍이 꺼지자 약 5달러 수준으로 내려왔습니다.
- 한정판 러닝화: 2016~2019년 응모에 당첨돼야 살 수 있던 운동화는 2022년 브랜드 협업이 끝나고 재고가 풀리자 평균 리셀가가 정가(220달러)보다 낮은 약 169달러로 내려왔습니다.
경매 최고가의 함정
뉴스에 나오는 ‘경매 최고가’는 상자도 뜯지 않은 완벽한 상태의 극소수 물건 이야기입니다. 1985년 65달러였던 농구화가 지금 2만 달러 이상에 거래되는 것도 한 번도 신지 않은 오리지널에 한한 일이고, 2023년 19만 달러에 낙찰된 첫 스마트폰도 미개봉 제품이었습니다. 대부분의 물건은 쓰는 순간 가치가 떨어지고, 거래 수수료와 보관 비용도 듭니다. 게임의 결과 화면에는 매장 정가 기준인지, 경매가 기준인지, 평균 리셀가 기준인지를 함께 표시했습니다.
"What if I'd bought it and never opened it?"
The Luxury & Resale Time Machine asks what would have happened if you'd bought things everyone wanted, like watches, bags, sneakers, a box of trading cards or the first smartphone, at the price of the day and kept them untouched. Brands and logos are hidden; you only see a description and the original price.

Same kind of item, very different outcomes
- A dive watch: a stainless dive watch that listed for $325 in 1974 has a 2024 store price of about $9,100, 28 times higher. Bought at $3,800 in 2006, though, it's only 2.4x. When you buy matters as much as what you buy.
- A quilted shoulder bag: $1,150 in 1990, about $11,300 at US stores in 2025. Even bought at $5,800 in 2019, it nearly doubled in six years.
- A box of cards: a sealed 1st Edition box of monster trading cards that cost $118 in 1999 sold at auction for $408,000 in 2021, for a box in top condition.
- A purple teddy bear: a limited-edition bear that traded around $250 during the 1997 collecting craze is now worth about $5.
- Limited sneakers: raffle-only running shoes from 2016–2019 fell to an average resale of about $169, below their $220 retail, after the brand ended the collaboration in 2022 and leftover stock flooded the market.
The trap of record auction prices
The "record price" in the news is about a handful of items in perfect, unopened condition. The 1985 basketball shoes that cost $65 and now trade above $20,000 are unworn originals only; the first iPhone that sold for $190,000 in 2023 was still sealed. Most things lose value the moment you use them, and selling and storage cost money. Each result shows whether it's based on a list price, an auction price or an average resale price.
