The conglomerate that grew out of Edison's electric company. Around 2000 it was among the world's most valuable companies, but it struggled after the financial crisis, left the Dow in 2018, and spun off its healthcare and energy businesses in 2023–2024 to become GE Aerospace. Adjusted prices assume the spun-off shares were reinvested.

The ride wasn't smooth, though. Someone who bought at the end-of-2016 peak was down 75% by the end of 2018 and needed 8 years to get back to even. The ending looks easy; sitting through the middle was not.

How it's calculated

Looks easy in hindsight?

Knowing the ending, everyone would have bought Apple and Nvidia. Hide the names, show only the mood of the time, and it gets a lot harder. Travel through ten turning points since 1970 and invest for yourself.
